Phil Foden has admitted that Manchester City’s hopes of retaining their Premier League crown are over following a disappointing 2-2 draw against Brentford. Despite Foden’s two goals putting City in control, late strikes from Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard secured a draw, leaving City sixth in the table and 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
“The title? Yeah, it’s done for sure; it’s done,” Foden said candidly. “We’re not stupid. So, we’ve got to aim for the top four and then focus on the Champions League.”
The England forward acknowledged the team’s subpar performances this season, describing it as a “learning curve” for the squad. This marks a dramatic shift for the reigning champions, who have won six Premier League titles in the past seven seasons.
City now sits two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification. Their next league game is against Ipswich, and they face a critical Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain on January 22.
Foden expressed determination for the team to recover: “It’s just about how you get back to your best, not just me, but the team as well. We can’t dwell on it; we’ve got to aim for the top four now and make things right.”
