The Kano Police Command has officially given an update on the cause of the recent explosion as an accident involving a UXO.
Contrary to initial fears of terrorism, the Kano explosion UXO incident stemmed from scrap metal transported from Yobe State.
According to the police, the Kano explosion UXO was accidentally triggered during offloading at Yongxing Steel Company premises.
Deputy Police PRO, Hussaini Abdullahi, disclosed this after investigations by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal-CBRN Unit concluded their analysis.
He said one unexploded ordnance detonated unintentionally, killing five individuals and injuring several others with varying degrees of wounds.
Further investigations at the site led to the recovery of nine unexploded ordnances from the steel company’s scrap yard.
Abdullahi emphasized that there was no Improvised Explosive Device, confirming the explosion was purely an accidental UXO incident.
The Kano explosion UXO incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on June 21, prompting immediate police and emergency response.
The victims, including company workers, were rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for emergency medical care and monitoring.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, extended condolences to families of the deceased and prayers for the injured.
He urged Kano residents to remain calm, assuring the public that there is no current threat to public safety.
The police warned against spreading panic and misinformation, which may further escalate fear among residents and business owners.
Residents were advised to report suspicious scrap materials and unusual activities immediately to police emergency hotlines for urgent response.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safety while collaborating with stakeholders to prevent further ordnance-related accidents in the state.
