President Bola Tinubu is set to deliver an address to a Joint Sitting of the National Assembly in honor of 25 years of uninterrupted democracy and legislative practice in Nigeria. The session, slated to commence at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, in the Green Chamber at the House of Representatives Building in the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, will feature a series of events.

The National Assembly’s 25th-anniversary celebrations promise to be a momentous occasion, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivering a keynote speech and three prominent figures – Honorable Femi Gbajabiamila, Senator David Mark, and General Abdulsalami Abubakar – presenting commemorative lectures on the theme “25 Years of the National Assembly: Lessons & Opportunities.”

Following the joint sitting, there will be the unveiling and commissioning of the National Assembly Library Complex, known as the Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu Building, with a tour of the new facility to follow.
The Fourth Republic of Nigeria was established on May 29, 1999, after the nation’s transition to civilian rule. Since then, Nigeria has enjoyed its longest period of uninterrupted legislative practice, marking a significant milestone in its political history.
The country’s democracy has evolved over the years, with six electoral cycles completed and a peaceful transfer of power between different political parties.

His Excellency, Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly, expressed, “The Silver Jubilee celebration is a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of our democratic institutions. The National Assembly has been instrumental in upholding our democracy, and this event serves as a fitting tribute to our collective dedication to the nation’s advancement.”
Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House, emphasized, “The 10th National Assembly is committed to commemorating our democratic journey. This special session highlights our commitment to reflecting on past lessons and embracing future opportunities as we continue to serve the Nigerian populace.”
Distinguished guests expected to attend the event include the Vice President, Deputy President of the Senate, Deputy Speaker of the House, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief of Staff to the President, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Clerk to the National Assembly, and other esteemed dignitaries.
