President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to appoint Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria today, marking a significant transition in the nation’s judiciary. This ceremony will take place at the State House Council Chambers and represents an important moment for the Nigerian legal system as a new era begins under Justice Kekere-Ekun’s leadership.

In addition to this appointment, President Tinubu has taken the opportunity to extend his heartfelt congratulations to Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who is retiring after a distinguished career in the judiciary. Justice Ariwoola has been a prominent figure in Nigeria’s legal landscape and has left a lasting impact through his years of dedicated service.

Justice Ariwoola began his judicial career as a Justice of the Court of Appeal, with postings in Kaduna, Enugu, and Lagos. His contributions in these roles were highly regarded, and his expertise was recognized with his appointment to the Supreme Court in 2011. Over the years, he has served the nation in various capacities, showcasing a deep commitment to justice and the rule of law.

In 2022, Justice Ariwoola was appointed Chief Justice of Nigeria, a position that placed him at the helm of the country’s judiciary. Throughout his tenure, he was known for his impactful leadership, which included efforts to enhance the Nigerian legal system and uphold the principles of justice. His leadership was marked by significant reforms and initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the judiciary.

President Tinubu praised Justice Ariwoola for his exemplary service, highlighting his role in strengthening Nigerian jurisprudence and reinforcing the legal framework of the country. The President acknowledged the retiring Chief Justice’s substantial contributions to the development of the judiciary and expressed gratitude for his dedication to upholding the law.

The President’s statement emphasized that Justice Ariwoola’s tenure has been characterized by a commitment to legal excellence and integrity. His contributions have been instrumental in advancing the cause of justice in Nigeria, and his retirement marks the end of an era of significant judicial leadership.

As Justice Ariwoola steps down, the appointment of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Edun as his successor is a key development for the Nigerian judiciary. Justice Kekere-Edun’s swearing-in is expected to bring new perspectives and continued progress to the legal system. The transition is seen as a positive move towards ensuring that the judiciary remains robust and capable of addressing the legal challenges of the nation.

The swearing-in ceremony will be attended by various dignitaries and members of the judiciary, marking a momentous occasion for the legal community and the country as a whole. This event underscores the importance of a smooth transition in leadership roles within the judiciary, ensuring that the principles of justice and the rule of law continue to be upheld.

President Tinubu’s remarks and actions reflect a deep respect for the judiciary and a commitment to supporting its continued development and integrity. As the nation moves forward, the appointment of Justice Kekere-Edun symbolizes a new chapter in Nigeria’s judicial history.
