Protests: PDP Chieftain Urges Tinubu to Form Government of National Unity

Barrister Uche Onyeagocha, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged President Bola Tinubu to establish a Government of National Unity (GNU) due to increasing dissatisfaction with his administration. Onyeagocha, who previously represented Owerri federal constituency as a lawmaker and served as Secretary to the Imo State Government under former Governor Emeka Ihedioha, delivered this recommendation through an open letter addressed to President Tinubu.

In his letter, Onyeagocha criticized President Tinubu’s approach to handling recent protests that started on August 1, 2024. These protests, driven by widespread frustration over issues such as hunger and poor governance, have highlighted deep-seated problems within the administration. Onyeagocha expressed concern that the President’s advisors might not be providing him with an accurate assessment of the country’s situation, leading to a disconnect between the government and the public’s true sentiments.

Onyeagocha pointedly criticized the President’s national broadcast on August 4, 2024. He argued that instead of alleviating the public’s anger, the broadcast intensified it. Onyeagocha described the address as adding “serious fuel to the flame,” implying that it worsened the already volatile situation and further alienated the public.
Given the current climate of discontent, Onyeagocha suggested that President Tinubu has two viable options to address the crisis. The first option is to dissolve his current government and immediately establish a Government of National Unity.

This approach would involve including representatives from various political parties and sectors of society in an effort to unify the nation and tackle the pressing issues collaboratively.
Alternatively, Onyeagocha warned that failing to take decisive action could lead to significant political, economic, and social crises. He emphasized that the growing unrest and dissatisfaction among Nigerians could escalate into more severe problems if the President does not address the root causes of the public discontent.

Onyeagocha concluded his letter by expressing hope that President Tinubu would act with wisdom, courage, and statesmanship. He urged the President to carefully consider the gravity of the situation and make the necessary adjustments to restore public trust and stability in the country.

The full text of the letter reflects Onyeagocha’s urgent call for a re-evaluation of the administration’s approach and a shift towards more inclusive and effective governance. The suggestion of forming a Government of National Unity represents a significant political move aimed at bridging the gap between the government and the people, fostering a more cohesive and responsive leadership during a period of crisis.

Overall, Onyeagocha’s appeal underscores the critical need for a strategic response to the nation’s growing challenges and the importance of leadership that can address and resolve the deep-rooted issues facing Nigeria.
