The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has suspended two of its ministers, Pastor Ayorinde AdeBello and Deacon Oke Mayowa, following allegations of homosexuality. The allegations surfaced after the blog Gistlover listed prominent Nigerians, including Pastor Ayorinde, accusing them of homosexual conduct. An internal memo, dated October 28, 2024, and signed by RCCG National Overseer Pastor Sunday Akande confirmed the suspension, stating that the church would begin an investigation into the matter.
In the memo, Pastor Akande underscored the church’s stance on biblical teachings and stated that the investigation was necessary to uphold RCCG’s core values. He cited scriptures, such as Leviticus 18:22 and 1 Corinthians 6:9–10, that align with the church’s view on same-sex relationships. Akande directed the investigation be handled confidentially, with AdeBello and Mayowa barred from church activities during this period as a precautionary measure.
Pastor Ayorinde responded to the allegations in an Instagram statement titled “My Response to the Allegation of Sodomising Teenagers.” He denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he has never engaged in sexual misconduct or preyed on teenagers. Ayorinde explained that a WhatsApp message shared out of context on social media was misconstrued; the discussion was part of a group focused on teaching male teenagers about self-esteem, hygiene, and life skills.
In his statement, Ayorinde further detailed the group’s intentions, which included Bible studies, prayer meetings, and discussions on relationships, academics, and career choices. He claimed that discussions on male health were framed to support the teens’ development and accused the blog of using the group chat content to falsely depict him as engaging in improper conduct.
The RCCG investigation is expected to conclude within two weeks, with church leaders noting the outcome could shape future policy on such issues.
