Rivers: Eleme Local Government Secretariat Set Ablaze After Election Results
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

A section of the Eleme Local Government Area secretariat in Rivers State was set ablaze following the local government elections held on Saturday, October 5, 2024.

This troubling incident occurred just as Brain Gokpa, the newly elected chairman, arrived at the secretariat, accompanied by his councilors and supporters to celebrate their electoral victory.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as flames engulfed parts of the complex. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the attackers appeared to target specific buildings within the secretariat, raising concerns about the motivations behind the arson.

While some reports suggested political rivalries could be a factor, no definitive reason has been established as of now. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the causes and identify those responsible.

The aftermath of the fire has left the local community in shock. Residents expressed their concern about the safety and stability of the area following the elections.

Many have voiced worries that such violence could deter future participation in local governance and discourage public servants from fulfilling their duties. Community leaders have called for calm and urged citizens to engage in peaceful dialogue rather than resorting to violence.

The local government election, which took place on October 5, was marked by a high level of voter turnout, with many citizens eager to express their political opinions.

Despite the excitement surrounding the election, this violent incident has overshadowed the democratic process, raising questions about the security measures in place to protect government facilities and the safety of elected officials.

Supporters of Brain Gokpa, who had gathered at the secretariat to celebrate, expressed their disappointment and anger over the attack.

Many were quick to condemn the violence, stating that it undermined the democratic process and threatened the progress they hoped to achieve under Gokpa’s leadership.

“We worked hard to elect our leaders peacefully, and this attack is not what we expected,” one supporter stated. “We deserve to celebrate our victory without fear.”

Local law enforcement officials have increased security in the area following the incident, aiming to reassure residents and deter any further violence.

Additionally, community organizations have started to mobilize resources to support those affected by the fire, as some essential documents and equipment were damaged in the blaze.

As investigations continue, the people of Eleme are left grappling with the implications of this attack. Community leaders are calling for unity and resilience in the face of adversity, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the local government.

They urge citizens to focus on constructive dialogue and to work together towards a brighter future for Eleme, despite the challenges that have arisen from this troubling incident.
