Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has publicly praised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his decision to move forward with local government elections scheduled for today (Saturday).

Atiku highlighted the importance of Fubara’s actions in reinforcing the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy, a critical aspect of democratic governance.

In a statement released on Friday night, Atiku urged the citizens of Rivers State to participate in the elections, emphasizing the significance of their votes in shaping local leadership.

He referred to the elections as a vital opportunity that not only strengthens the democratic framework but also breathes life into the fundamental principles of governance that are essential for the nation.

“These elections symbolize hope and revitalization for our democracy,” Atiku stated. “They stand as a beacon of possibility for constitutional democracy, reminding us of the importance of local governance in our society.

By participating, citizens can uphold the Supreme Court’s directive on local government autonomy, which is crucial for a truly representative government.”

Atiku further articulated that these elections serve as a powerful affirmation of constitutionalism and the rule of law.

He called on all advocates of democracy to rally behind this cause, emphasizing that the elections are not just about selecting leaders but also about ensuring that the people’s voices are heard.

“It is a call to every believer in the democratic process to stand firm in defense of the people’s right to choose their leaders freely and fairly. This is not just a civic duty; it is a fundamental right that should be cherished and exercised by all,” he added.

The former Vice President also commended Governor Fubara for his courageous leadership in ensuring that these local government elections take place.

He acknowledged that holding elections at this level is vital for empowering communities and allowing them to have a say in their governance.

“I encourage every resident to embrace their civic duty with peace and purpose as they cast their votes. This is an opportunity to choose leaders who will represent their interests at the grassroots level,” Atiku stated.

He concluded by reiterating his unwavering conviction that the democratic process is sacred. According to him, it is through this process that the people can shape their future by choosing their leaders in every local community.

In this context, the local government elections in Rivers State are not merely a routine political event but a significant step toward reinforcing democratic values and ensuring that local voices contribute to national governance.

By participating, the people of Rivers State can play a crucial role in defining their leadership and, by extension, their future.
