The Rivers State Police have announced that they will not allow the Local Government Election scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024, to take place.

This decision has raised concerns among residents and political parties in the area, as the election is a crucial event for local governance.

In a formal statement issued by police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the police clarified the reasons behind their decision.

The statement was titled “Proposed October 5th, 2024 Local Government Chairman Election” and outlined the circumstances leading to the cancellation.

The police confirmed that they received a restraining order from the court that prohibits them from providing security during the elections, which is essential for maintaining peace and order during such events.

The police also acknowledged a recent judgment from the Federal High Court in Abuja, issued on September 30, 2024.

This ruling explicitly barred the police force from participating in the local government elections, citing legal grounds that must be respected.

The police’s Legal Department advised that this court ruling takes precedence over any previous plans to assist in the election process.

The announcement has sparked reactions from various stakeholders, including political parties and civil society groups.

Many are expressing their disappointment, fearing that the absence of police presence could lead to unrest or violence during the election.

Elections are often accompanied by heightened tensions, and the lack of security could exacerbate any existing conflicts between political factions.

Additionally, the statement referenced a recent protest march organized by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

During this protest, party members called for strict adherence to court orders, emphasizing the need for a transparent and lawful electoral process.

The PDP has been vocal about its concerns regarding the fairness of the upcoming election and has urged the authorities to respect the judicial decisions made regarding the electoral process.

Local residents are left in a state of uncertainty, wondering how the cancellation of police support will affect the election. Many are concerned about their safety and the integrity of the electoral process.

Some citizens believe that without adequate security measures, the election could be disrupted, leading to potential chaos at polling stations.

As the situation develops, it is clear that the decision of the Rivers State Police Command will have significant implications for the election and for local governance in the region.

With the election just days away, political leaders and citizens alike are hoping for a resolution that will allow for a peaceful and fair electoral process.

The Rivers State Police’s decision not to support the Local Government Election due to a court order has created a challenging situation for the state.
