The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially called on Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure a safe and secure environment for the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State, scheduled for October 5.
This request comes amid concerns regarding the security situation during the elections, especially after recent announcements from the Rivers State Police Command.
The Rivers State Police Command had previously stated that it would not provide security for the upcoming elections, citing compliance with a federal high court order from Abuja.
Grace Iringe-Koko, the police spokesperson, confirmed this decision, raising alarm among political parties and voters who fear that inadequate security could lead to violence or disruptions during the voting process.
In light of these developments, the PDP issued a statement on Friday through its spokesman, the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the elections are conducted smoothly and safely, noting that the IGP has a constitutional responsibility to protect the democratic process in the state.
Ologunagba argued that the citizens of Rivers State possess an inherent right to participate in democratic activities without interference from any individual, group, or organization.
“The PDP insists that the right to civil control of democratic activities in Rivers State belongs to the people of the state. This right, including participation in Local Government Area elections, cannot be curtailed or appropriated by anyone under any guise,” he stated.
Ologunagba expressed confidence that the people of Rivers State are prepared and eager to vote. He pointed out that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has confirmed its readiness to conduct the elections, having secured all necessary operational materials in line with the directives from the Supreme Court.
He highlighted that no court has the authority to stop elections as outlined under the amended Electoral Act of 2022.
The PDP also raised concerns about potential disruptions, urging the IGP to prioritize public safety during the elections.
They warned that both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the police chief should be held accountable if any breakdown of law and order occurs on election day.
The PDP’s call to action aims to reinforce the significance of a secure electoral environment in fostering a healthy democracy.
The party’s statement underscores its commitment to upholding the democratic rights of the citizens and ensuring that the local government elections holds without incident.
