To curb the recurring farmers and herders clashes, the Rivers State Government has inaugurated a peace committee.
The initiative aims to develop sustainable solutions for agricultural conflict and ensure peaceful coexistence among local communities.
Speaking during the committee’s inauguration in Port Harcourt, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Worika, outlined its objectives.
He emphasized that while agriculture remains central to Nigeria’s economy, unresolved conflicts threaten lives and disrupt economic activity.
Worika, who also chairs the committee, revealed that Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) is committed to conflict prevention.
He explained that the government seeks to promote justice, deepen dialogue, and foster sustainable peace across rural communities.
“This committee was formed as a proactive step to detect early warning signs of tension and mediate disputes non-violently,” he said.
It will also promote lawful farming and grazing practices and encourage sustainable land and water resource management.
Furthermore, the committee will advise on strategic land use, pasture development, and environmental sustainability for rural harmony.
Public awareness campaigns and grassroots advocacy will support mutual understanding between farmers and herders in the state.
Prof. Worika stressed the committee’s inclusive approach, pulling members from diverse sectors like traditional rulers and civil society.
Also included are security agencies, herder and farmer associations, and key ministries like agriculture, justice, and local government.
He urged committee members to act with fairness, diligence, and wisdom to foster trust and build long-term community partnerships.
“Our goal extends beyond conflict prevention—we must strengthen collaboration and sustain economic peace among all stakeholders,” he noted.
The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture will serve as the committee’s secretary and provide technical coordination.
