The leadership of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners in Rivers State has urged retirees to attend the upcoming verification exercise.
The call follows the state’s decision to verify genuine pensioners through a process organised by sole administrator Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas.
Union Secretary Dr Joseph Agbo told reporters that the Rivers pensioners verification exercise is vital for implementing minimum pension increases.
According to him, the five-day programme aims to ensure only genuine retirees benefit from the new minimum pension adjustments.
He criticised individuals urging pensioners to boycott the process, describing them as political tools serving selfish and divisive agendas.
Dr Agbo stressed that such calls work against retirees’ welfare, particularly those left stagnant for over two decades without increases.
He explained that many pensioners have endured over twenty years without any increment to their monthly pension allowances or benefits.
The verification, scheduled by the office of the Head of Service, will authenticate eligible beneficiaries and remove fraudulent records.
Agbo emphasised that attending the verification will enable retirees to enjoy approved increases and future welfare programmes in the state.
He maintained that the exercise protects pensioners’ rights, strengthens accountability, and guarantees fairness in the pension distribution system.
