Ibok-Ete Ibas, the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, appeared before the National Assembly after an initial delay, requesting additional time to prepare a comprehensive report on the ongoing state of emergency in Rivers.
Ibas, who is also a former Naval Chief, acknowledged the critical role of the National Assembly committee and expressed his sincere regret for missing the earlier invitation.
He explained that urgent matters related to stabilizing governance in the state had taken precedence over his earlier engagement with the committee.
“I deeply regret my inability to attend earlier engagements,” Ibas said, elaborating that the delay was not due to any disrespect but due to the overwhelming demands of managing a state under emergency conditions.

He also noted that public holidays and weekends had further contributed to the delay but reiterated that his absence was not intentional.
The Sole Administrator reassured the committee that, although Rivers State is “relatively calm,” the situation remains “fragile” and requires delicate handling to prevent further escalation.
He emphasized the importance of approaching the matter with careful consideration and said that the current situation needs thorough management.
Ibas made a formal request for more time to prepare a detailed and accurate report that would address the ongoing emergency and provide clarity on the state’s governance during the crisis.

“It is important that any engagement with this committee is done with the depth, accuracy, and clarity it rightfully deserves,” he added.
Ibas also reaffirmed his commitment to fully cooperating with the committee, promising to share all relevant information at the appropriate time.
He thanked the committee chairman and members for their understanding and acknowledged the vital role the media plays in supporting the federal government’s efforts in managing the state’s transitional governance.
The committee will review Ibas’ request and decide on the next steps in overseeing Rivers State’s emergency governance.
