Rivers State athlete reward delay has triggered growing fears among medalists from the recent National Sports Festival.
During the event in Abeokuta, the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibot-Ete Ibas (retired), pledged cash rewards. He promised N2 million for gold, N1 million for silver, and N500,000 for bronze medalists from Team Rivers.
However, over one month has passed since the festival ended, and no payments or updates have reached the athletes.
Additionally, on June 28, 2025, Rivers Angels proudly won the President Federation Cup (female) at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium in Lagos.
The Sole Administrator, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Ibibia Worika, addressed the press at the match venue.
He assured the public that Rivers Angels would receive N50 million and be hosted alongside Team Rivers at Government House.
Since then, silence has followed, raising tough questions about the delay and the role of the Ministry of Sports.
Some athletes question whether Acting Permanent Secretary Mrs. Ibiwari Wokoma lacks capacity or political backing to execute plans.
Speaking anonymously, one medalist expressed concern over the administration’s expiring tenure and the fading hope of compensation.
“I hope the promise wasn’t just motivational talk. Many of us borrowed money to train and survive,” the athlete said.
He further appealed to the administrator, urging him to fulfill the pledge before leaving office.
Similarly, athlete Nengi Premie voiced disappointment, recalling years of dedication with no rewards or public recognition from previous governments.
“I believed this administration would be different, but the silence has become troubling,” Premie added with visible concern.
Despite earlier enthusiasm, uncertainty now clouds the air as athletes await their long-promised reception and cash incentives.
