Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed confidence in Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, despite the club’s struggles under his leadership. Speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, where he was named Best Middle East Player of 2024, Ronaldo said the “storm will finish” at Old Trafford but pointed out lingering structural issues within the club.
Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag last month, has endured a challenging start, with five losses in his first 10 games. The 39-year-old coach admitted his job could be at risk if United’s poor form continues. However, Ronaldo, who played under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon, believes the Portuguese manager can succeed in the Premier League despite its difficulty. “He did a fantastic job in Portugal… Fingers crossed, it will be good with him,” Ronaldo said.
Ronaldo, who left Manchester United in 2022 following a controversial exit, reiterated his critique of the club’s deeper issues. He likened the problems to a “sick fish in an aquarium,” saying, “You take [the fish] out, fix the problem, but if you put it back in, it will be sick again.” According to Ronaldo, the recurring issues stem from poor management rather than coaching.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also addressed the lack of progress since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos group acquired a 29% stake in the club. Despite winning the FA Cup last season, United’s on-field performance has worsened, leaving them 14th in the Premier League, just eight points above relegation.
Reflecting on his future, Ronaldo hinted at aspirations to own a football club. “Mark my words, I will be owner of a big club, for sure,” he said. Despite the turbulence, Ronaldo expressed his continued love for Manchester United and hope for a turnaround under Amorim’s leadership.
