Ruben Amorim Pledges to Restore Manchester United’s Identity and Glory

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has emphasized that his primary goal is to restore the club’s identity as he embarks on his journey at the helm. The 39-year-old manager, in his first interview with the club’s in-house TV channel, shared his vision for the team and how he plans to build a foundation for success. Amorim acknowledged the challenging task ahead but remains resolute in his belief that winning games and, more importantly, establishing a clear identity for the club will pave the way for a return to greatness.
“We know that we need time, but we have to win time,” Amorim said. “To win time is to win games. But the most important thing for me is identity.” With Manchester United currently sitting in 13th place in the Premier League standings, Amorim understands the urgency of turning things around but is committed to instilling a strong, coherent playing style from day one. He emphasized that developing a clear game model, including how to play, how to press, and focusing on the finer details of the game, would be the key to building a successful team.
Amorim’s commitment to ensuring his players understand and buy into the club’s identity is unwavering. “From day one, we will start with our identity. Of course, we are going to prepare for the games, but we will focus a lot on our game model,” he explained. He also pointed out that while it’s crucial to focus on all aspects of play, balance is key. “You cannot go 100% on every detail because it will be confusing for the players,” he said, highlighting the importance of simplicity in implementing his ideas. Amorim’s first match as Manchester United’s head coach will be against Ipswich at Portman Road on Sunday, November 24.
Although Amorim recognizes the “great responsibility” that comes with managing a club as prestigious as Manchester United, he humbly views himself as a small part of the larger process. “I’m a small part of the club,” he stated. “I know that the manager or head coach is so important in the club because you have in your hands the engine of the club. But I want to be part of something. I don’t want to be just in charge. I want everybody together.” Amorim’s focus on unity within the team is a central theme of his philosophy, aiming to make the journey towards success more enjoyable and effective.
Reflecting on Manchester United’s recent struggles, Amorim expressed his deep belief in the club’s historical significance. “A long time ago, we didn’t win the Premier League. But if you ask me, Manchester United is the biggest club in England. This is part of the history, not just now. We have to address that, to show that, and to try to win again,” he said. He fully recognizes the weight of expectations placed on him but is determined to help the club regain its rightful position at the top.
Amorim also expressed his immense pride in being appointed as Manchester United’s head coach. “I’m really, really proud to be a Manchester United coach. It’s amazing. It’s a real honor to be here,” he shared, while acknowledging the incredible history the club represents. In a clip from the interview, Amorim was seen taking in the sights of a floodlit Old Trafford, a place that has long been a symbol of footballing excellence. “You watch on TV and you know that it’s big and impressive, but when you are here you can feel it and I think you feel the history,” he added.
Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, also weighed in on the appointment, stating that Amorim is the right man to bring fresh energy and excitement to the club. “This is the right moment for him to come, bring his energy, his qualities, and his knowledge of football,” Fernandes said. He went on to praise Amorim’s work at Sporting, noting that he brought a sense of excitement back to the club. “He brought a lot of good things to the club and hopefully, he can do the same here because sometimes a person can change the energy of a space if it’s the right moment.”
As Amorim prepares to lead Manchester United into a new era, both fans and players are eager to see how his tactical acumen and leadership will shape the team. His commitment to restoring the club’s identity and returning it to its former glory is clear, and his first challenge will be to transform the team into a cohesive unit that plays with purpose and passion.
