Saidu Ahmed Alkali resigns as Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation to pursue his governorship ambition in Gombe State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development followed a meeting between Alkali and Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, where he formally announced his resignation.

A circular confirming the resignation was signed by George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and issued by Ibrahim Kana, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office.

According to the circular, Alkali’s decision aligns with Section 88(1) of the Independent National Electoral Commission regulations and the timetable for party primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.

Officials explained that the resignation ensures full compliance with legal provisions guiding political participation by public office holders.

Tinubu’s Directive Forces Cabinet Exit

Furthermore, the move follows a directive from President Tinubu mandating that cabinet members seeking elective positions must resign before participating in party primaries.

This policy aims to promote fairness, transparency, and accountability within the electoral process. Consequently, affected officials must step down before formally declaring their ambitions.

Notably, Alkali, a former senator who represented Gombe North, becomes the third member of the Federal Executive Council to resign under this directive.

His exit signals increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as more government officials prepare to contest key positions.

In conclusion, the Saidu Alkali resigns as Minister of Transportation development highlights the growing momentum toward the 2027 elections. His decision reflects compliance with electoral laws while positioning him for the Gombe governorship race.
