Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has awarded a cash prize of N10 million to Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the best

graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session

Nwosu, who graduated from the Faculty of Science with a degree in Biochemistry, achieved an outstanding

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93. The announcement was made on Thursday at the university’s 28th

Convocation Ceremony, held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium in Ojo.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, praised the academic excellence displayed by

Nwosu and used the occasion to reiterate his administration’s commitment to educational development in Lagos.

During the event, the university also conferred honorary doctorate degrees on distinguished personalities, including

the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier-General Buba Marwa (retd.), and

former Lagos Deputy Governor, Otunba Olufemi Pedro. Both were recognised for their contributions to national development and public service.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that academic accomplishments deserve equal celebration as achievements in other industries

such as entertainment and sports. He noted that the state government is focused on building an innovative and

knowledge-driven society, in line with the THEMES+ agenda.

Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its

unwavering support, revealing that 43 out of the university’s 44 courses received full accreditation in late 2023. She

also highlighted the university’s progress, including new international postgraduate programmes under the Africa

Centre of Excellence for STEM Education.

A total of 11,917 students graduated at the convocation, comprising diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and

doctoral degree holders. The Chancellor, Professor Gbolahan Elias (SAN), encouraged graduates to represent the

university with pride and to remain resilient and innovative as they step into their professional journeys.
