Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, officially inaugurated the second phase of the Ikoyi road rehabilitation project on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing urban development efforts. Seven major roads in the prestigious Ikoyi area—Oyinkan Abayomi, Femi Okunnu, Macpherson, Ilabere, Ilu, Inupa, and Kuramo—were unveiled as part of the initiative. This project is expected to ease traffic congestion, address flooding issues, and enhance the overall infrastructure of one of Lagos’ key economic hubs.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the vital role of transportation infrastructure in driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for residents. During his address, he emphasized that these upgraded roads are not merely thoroughfares but vital lifelines that will support local businesses and facilitate smoother mobility. “Transportation infrastructure is the backbone of any thriving economy,” Sanwo-Olu stated, underscoring the broader impact of the project on the community’s well-being.
The Ikoyi Urban Regeneration Initiative, launched in 2020, is central to the ongoing transformation of the area. With the completion of Phase 1 in June 2021, the second phase brings vital upgrades that are set to reduce travel time, improve drainage systems, and boost property values. Sanwo-Olu further explained that these developments were part of the state’s larger vision to modernize Lagos and ensure that key areas like Ikoyi remain competitive and accessible.
The governor also appealed to the public to take responsibility for the upkeep of the newly upgraded roads. He reminded residents that the infrastructure was built with taxpayers’ money and called for collective efforts to ensure their maintenance, which will, in turn, allow for continued development across other areas of Lagos. “Let us work together to protect what we have built,” he urged, emphasizing the importance of community collaboration in preserving public assets.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing Lagos’ infrastructure, which remains a cornerstone of the THEMES+ Agenda. The upgraded Ikoyi roads are seen as a critical step toward realising the vision of a more modern, efficient, and sustainable urban landscape, with significant benefits for both residents and businesses in the area.
