Senate Clears Air on Natasha’s Suspension, Denies Sexual Harassment Claims

The Nigerian Senate has denied suspending Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In a statement, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele clarified that Natasha’s suspension was due to her flagrant disobedience to Sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Senate Standing Orders 2023 (As Amended) and her unparliamentary behavior during plenaries and proceedings.

Bamidele emphasized that the disciplinary action against Natasha was not related to her allegations of sexual harassment, but rather her repeated violations of legislative decorum. He noted that Natasha’s petition on sexual harassment failed to meet the clear and established procedural requirements for submitting petitions to the Senate.

The Senate had suspended Natasha for six months over alleged misconduct and refusal to comply with its sitting arrangement during plenary. However, the Senate clarified that if Natasha submits a written apology, the leadership may consider lifting the suspension before the six-month period expires.

Bamidele expressed dissatisfaction with the attempt to politicize a disciplinary action that was strictly based on clear violations of Senate Standing Orders 2023 (As Amended). He urged the media not to distort facts to suit a false narrative, emphasizing that the Senate’s rules apply to all members without exception.

The statement also noted that Natasha’s suspension was a decision of the Committee of the Whole Senate, following the submission of a report by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions.

Bamidele emphasized that the Senate’s disciplinary action was imperative, necessary, and justified to restore order and uphold the integrity of the Senate as the country’s foremost democratic institution.

The Senate’s clarification comes amidst reports that Natasha had accused Akpabio of sexual harassment. However, the Senate’s statement reiterated that Natasha’s suspension was not related to these allegations.
