The Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, has commended the National Assembly for its swift approval of the emergency rule in Rivers State.
According to Bamidele, the lawmakers’ decision to ratify the proclamation by President Bola Tinubu was a timely
intervention that prevented anarchy in the state.
Bamidele, who spoke at the 29th convocation ceremony of the Ekiti State University, emphasized that the National
Assembly’s action was guided by its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the country.
He noted that the lawmakers’ decision was not taken lightly, but rather after careful consideration of the security
situation in Rivers State.
The Senate leader lamented that despite the National Assembly’s efforts to prevent chaos in Rivers State, lawmakers
were subjected to vicious criticism from opposition parties. He described the criticism as “toxic” and “unpatriotic,”
noting that it was driven by parochial interests rather than a genuine concern for the well-being of the nation.
Bamidele emphasized that the National Assembly’s decision to approve the emergency rule in Rivers State was taken
in the national interest.

He noted that the lawmakers’ primary concern was to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the state, which would
have had far-reaching consequences for the entire country.
The Senate leader commended his colleagues for their patriotism and commitment to the well-being of the nation. He
noted that the National Assembly’s actions were guided by a deep sense of responsibility and a commitment to
promoting the common good.
Bamidele’s comments were echoed by other dignitaries who attended the convocation ceremony. The Vice-
Chancellor of the Ekiti State University, Prof. Joseph Ayodele, commended the Senate leader for his commitment to
promoting education and development in the country.
The Pro-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Akin Oyebode, also praised Bamidele for his contributions to the
development of the institution. He noted that the Senate leader had facilitated several projects in the university,
including the construction of medical hostels and a mini stadium.
