Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, representing Nasarawa West under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills are not aimed at undermining the North. Speaking in Abuja, the senator emphasised that the reforms are part of broader efforts to strengthen the nation’s economy and should not be misinterpreted as anti-North.
Highlighting the administration’s significant interventions in the region, such as the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline, the revamped Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road, and the Sokoto-Badagri superhighway, Wadada argued that these projects demonstrate Tinubu’s commitment to the North. He urged citizens to focus on the benefits these reforms could bring rather than succumbing to unfounded fears.
The Sarkin Yakin Keffi downplayed fears about the tax reforms, reminding northerners of their historical contributions to Nigeria’s tax system through cattle and community taxes. According to him, the region has always set a precedent in tax contributions and should embrace the reforms as a means to achieve sustainable development. While acknowledging some grey areas in the bills, Wadada called for consultations to address these issues and ensure fairness, particularly in the contentious Value Added Tax (VAT) sharing formula.
Wadada dismissed claims that the tax reforms might jeopardise Tinubu’s chances in 2027, describing such predictions as premature. He urged Nigerians to evaluate the administration based on its overall impact rather than isolated policies. According to him, Tinubu’s unprecedented approach to governance is creating opportunities for significant economic and infrastructural transformation.
The senator also highlighted the potential of the Sokoto-Badagri superhighway, a project initiated during the Shehu Shagari era but revitalised by Tinubu. He noted that this project could unlock agricultural and livestock opportunities in the North, with plans for silos, ranches, and partnerships with Brazil for improved livestock management. Wadada stressed that such initiatives reflect a strategic vision for regional growth.
While calling for patience and broader dialogue, Wadada reaffirmed his confidence in the President’s intentions. He encouraged the administration to prioritise consultations with stakeholders to ensure the reforms are understood and embraced across all regions, particularly the North, which he believes stands to benefit significantly from Tinubu’s transformative policies.
