Vice President Kashim Shettima called for immediate help for flood victims in Maiduguri, Borno State. He made this appeal during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York.
Upon arriving at the UN building, Shettima was welcomed by Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed. During their discussion, he emphasized the urgent need for relief efforts to combat the serious impacts of climate change.
Shettima acknowledged the UN’s efforts but urged for more support to stabilize the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region. He highlighted the need for effective and coordinated relief plans for victims across Nigeria.
He expressed concern about the devastation caused by floods and climate issues, stating better-organized relief efforts are essential. The Vice President also called for stronger international assistance to address these challenges.
Shettima pointed out the need to take action against climate change and environmental threats affecting Nigerians. He assured Guterres of Nigeria’s commitment to regional stability, climate resilience, and international cooperation.
In response, Guterres expressed condolences for the recent losses in Nigeria and promised increased support from the UN. He recognized Nigeria as a crucial partner in the UN’s efforts for a peaceful Africa.
In a separate meeting, Shettima spoke with Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, referring to the Commonwealth as a family that must be protected. He assured Scotland of Nigeria’s continued support and participation, stating Nigeria would play a key role in the Commonwealth’s draft declaration.
He confirmed Nigeria’s attendance at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa, praising Scotland’s leadership, saying, “We are proud of your dedication and success in office.”
