Fulham manager Marco Silva has expressed high praise for Nigerian international Alex Iwobi, asserting that Iwobi ranks among the best players in the club this season. Since joining the Cottagers, Iwobi has showcased his skills, becoming a key figure in Silva’s squad and impressing fans and analysts alike.
In the current Premier League campaign, Iwobi has made a significant impact, scoring two goals and providing two assists across 11 appearances. His recent contribution came during Fulham’s 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace, where he set up Harry Wilson for the second goal, sealing the match for his team. The win has propelled Fulham to eighth place on the league table.
Silva’s decision to include Iwobi consistently in the starting lineup reflects his faith in the player’s abilities. While Wilson, another talented forward, has also been in excellent form, scoring three goals in seven substitute appearances, Iwobi’s consistent performance has made him a preferred choice in the starting eleven. Silva highlighted Iwobi’s strong start to the season, emphasizing his impressive form since pre-season and his pivotal role in the team’s midfield and attacking play.
“Alex has been brilliant from day one of pre-season,” said Silva. “He’s doing everything right and has earned his place. He’s competing against some very good players, but he has been one of our best players this season, if not the best.”
The Fulham boss also commented on the internal competition for starting spots, noting that Adama Traoré and Reiss Nelson have been in great form. However, Silva maintains that Iwobi’s overall contribution and consistency have made him indispensable. He admitted that while Wilson’s sharpness and goal-scoring capabilities present a “good headache” for the coaching staff, Iwobi’s consistent performances have justified his selection in the starting lineup.
The synergy between Iwobi and Wilson has been crucial for Fulham, as highlighted by Silva. He pointed out the effective partnership that has been developing between the two players, particularly in creating scoring opportunities. Silva praised Wilson’s ability to make an immediate impact from the bench, noting his quick goal against Crystal Palace, which he scored just 39 seconds after coming on.
Silva explained, “The connection between Alex and Harry is getting stronger. They’ve created several chances together, and it’s great for the team. I’m really pleased with their understanding on the field.”
Looking ahead, Iwobi is set to join the Nigerian national team for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda. Nigeria currently leads Group C with 10 points, and a victory in the next match will secure their qualification for the tournament in Morocco, with a game still in hand.
