The Sokoto State government has approved a substantial budget of N1.1 billion to procure motorized boats and life jackets aimed at improving safety in 22 local government areas (LGAs) that are prone to flooding. This decision comes in response to the recent floods that have impacted many communities in the state.
Ibrahim Dade-Adare, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, made this announcement following a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Ahmed Aliyu in Sokoto on Wednesday.
Dade-Adare explained that the procurement of these essential safety items is a direct response to the findings of a committee established to assess flooding issues in the state.
According to the committee’s report, 22 out of the 23 LGAs in Sokoto State have experienced flooding, highlighting the urgent need for effective safety measures. “As a result, the state government found it necessary to procure motorized boats and life jackets for these areas,” Dade-Adare said.
He emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance disaster preparedness and response in the state.
The Commissioner also mentioned that Dange-Shuni LGA was excluded from this equipment distribution, as it was not affected by the recent floods.
The motorized boats will serve as vital resources for rescue operations and transportation during flood emergencies, ensuring that residents have safe means of evacuation if necessary.
In addition to the flood safety measures, the Sokoto State government approved N565.2 million for the purchase of 12,376 bags of 25kg of rice. This rice will be distributed to poor and vulnerable individuals across the state, providing much-needed support to those facing food insecurity due to the economic impacts of the floods.
Dade-Adare further noted that the council allocated N149.8 million for the completion of a terminal block at the local airport. This investment is part of the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and services in the region, which is essential for economic growth and community development.
The measures taken by the Sokoto government are crucial as the region prepares for potential future flooding. By investing in safety equipment and providing support for vulnerable populations, the government aims to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters on its citizens.
Community leaders and residents have expressed gratitude for the government’s proactive approach, hoping it will lead to better preparedness and faster responses in the face of emergencies.
