The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, against the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The legal challenge, which sought to dispute the leadership of the Assembly under Speaker Amaewhule, was rejected by a five-member panel led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji.
In addition to the dismissal, the court ordered Governor Fubara to pay two million naira to the Assembly and Amaewhule as compensation for the legal proceedings. The case, which had attracted considerable attention, concluded with the withdrawal of the suit by Fubara’s lawyer, Yusuf Ali, leading to the court’s ruling.
This ruling has set a precedent regarding the legal authority of the state’s legislature and the governor’s involvement in its internal leadership issues. It also raises questions about the power struggle between the executive and the legislature in Rivers State, a situation that has been closely watched by political observers within the region.
