Tension as NLC President, Ajaero Honors Police Summon

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, is set to face a police interrogation today, Thursday, amid escalating tensions in Abuja and across Nigeria. The incident has caught the attention of Nigerians nationwide, with many expressing apprehension over the potential outcome.

The NLC has announced plans for a nationwide solidarity demonstration in response to the police’s invitation of Ajaero over alleged charges of terrorism financing. According to a notice issued by Emmanuel Ugboaja, the General Secretary of the NLC, members across the country are being called upon to mobilize and show their support for Ajaero. This action is set to demonstrate the NLC’s unity and commitment to defending their leader against what they view as unjust accusations.

The NLC’s call to action includes a detailed plan for participation. In Abuja, all Central Working Committee (CWC) members and other NLC affiliates residing in the city are expected to gather at the NLC national headquarters by 8 a.m. on August 29, 2024. From there, they will accompany Ajaero to the police station for the scheduled interrogation. This show of solidarity aims to underscore the collective strength of the NLC and its affiliates.

The police had originally summoned Ajaero to appear on August 20, 2024, to answer allegations involving terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony. However, Ajaero’s lawyer, Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, requested a postponement of the meeting, citing Ajaero’s unavailability on the original date. Consequently, the new date for the meeting has been set for today.

The police’s decision to summon Ajaero follows a recent raid on the NLC’s national secretariat in Abuja. During the raid, the police were reportedly searching for seditious materials related to the recent nationwide #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest. The raid has been a source of significant controversy, with many viewing it as a move to intimidate and suppress the NLC’s advocacy efforts.

The growing tension reflects the broader political and social climate in Nigeria, where labor organizations and activists often find themselves at odds with government authorities. The outcome of today’s events will likely have implications for the ongoing relationship between the NLC and the Nigerian government, as well as for the broader landscape of labor activism in the country.
