The Emerging Kogi: Economic Growth Impact Transforming Better Reality
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

Sometime in 2017, a year after the inauguration of former Governor Yahaya Bello, I spent close to a month in Lokoja and boredom almost finished my life, I felt like I was choking, like I couldn’t breathe. Back then, I was barely in Lokoja like it is now.

This experience, is particularly unique, especially coming from a place like Portharcourt, where a very vibrant hospitality market, crazy social life and bustling nightlife presence. Lokoja was like being dipped in cold water. There were just a few hotels, eateries and bars. I recall how the only major outdoor joint was Jakies, somewhere along NUJ road. I remember becoming a regular there with few options.

Today, the story and reality is different. This reaffirms validation of the Alhaji Yahaya Bello’s political system, structure and development plan. Quite a number of things drives development–especially economic development which is the main driver of other forms of development. Population–which is the human resource–is chief amongst the factors. There is a significant surge in population and this has given a geometrical boost to nightlife, hospitality and the overall socioeconomic growth in Lokoja.

Today, there are countless, outdoor joints, lounges, standard hotels, suites and apartments. Today, the population of Kogi state is projected to be around 4,809,743 which adds a significant difference of about 336,253 as against 4,473,490 in 2016 before Mr Bello came. Presently, Lokoja stands around 692,050 as against 511,000 before Mr Bello, given a very bold and vibrant increase of about 181,050. This is called growth!

The infrastructural investments of the present government led by Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo goes to meet the growing demand of a rapidly growing population as much as it makes the statement: “we are ready” to both local and foreign investors. Governor Ododo is making giant statements with an ongoing international market project, an international airport project, massive road networks, primary healthcare centers, robust security attention and very significant investments in education and educational support, amongst other thoughtful and deliberate investments. All these are geared towards meeting the increasing demands from an equally increasing population.

Mr Ododo has nipped the the bud on unnecessary distractions associated with discussions on salary nonpayments. He is demanding for more serious engagements. This is it; this is growth!

At the close of work this evening, I’m going to take a stroll to one of the numerous lounges here in Lokoja, a city that enjoys a 24/7 security, courtesy of a very responsible and serious-minded goal-orientated government of the people’s Chief Servant. I will go along with few friends, unwind, and we will relax into the warm embrace of a classic nightlife that is only possible in the City of Lokoja.

So, you are free to come along. Embrace the warm hospitality and bubbling nightlife of Lokoja city. Put your money to support the local economy and businesses. Patriotism is action, and we must all support local businesses to help grow the economy.
