Thiago Almada’s Stunning Strike Lifts Argentina to 1-0 Win Over Uruguay

Argentina took a significant step towards qualifying for the 2026 World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Uruguay in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.

The match, played at Estadio Centenario, was marked by a lack of clear-cut chances, but Thiago Almada‘s stunning

strike in the second half proved to be the difference-maker.

The first half was a tightly contested affair, with both teams struggling to create scoring opportunities. Argentina

came closest when Enzo Fernandez had a shot cleared away from close range, but Uruguay’s defense held firm.

The second half was more of the same, with both teams canceling each other out in midfield. However, Almada’s

moment of magic changed the complexion of the game. The former Atlanta United attacking midfielder received the

ball on the left, cut onto his stronger right foot, and unleashed a wonderful curling effort into the top corner.

Uruguay pushed hard for an equalizer, but Argentina’s defense held firm. Nicolas Otamendi, in particular, was

impressive, making several key interventions to deny Uruguay’s forwards.

Argentina’s victory was all the more impressive given the absence of Lionel Messi. The team’s talismanic forward was

missing due to injury, but his teammates stepped up to the plate to secure a vital three points.

The win takes Argentina a step closer to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. With several matches still to play,

Argentina will be confident of securing one of the top spots in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.

Uruguay, on the other hand, will be disappointed with the loss. The team had several chances to take the lead, but

ultimately came up short.

The match was marked by a number of physical challenges, with several players on both teams receiving yellow cards. Argentina’s Nico Gonzalez was sent off in the dying minutes of the game for a reckless challenge.
