The federal government has unveiled a schedule for the release of the proposed three-in-one identity card.
As per the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Nigerians are set to commence utilizing the services of the proposed three-in-one identity card starting in August 2024.
Politics Nigeria discloses that the single multipurpose card is designed to amalgamate various functions encompassing identity, financial, and social services.
An undisclosed member of the implementation team revealed that the commission has been diligently striving to achieve its objectives.
The source further mentioned that the project is progressing as planned and is scheduled for launch within the next two months.
Moreover, it was revealed that the commission has initiated the testing and deployment phase.
“We initially aimed for July, despite facing some delays. However, we are optimistic that the launch will take place between July and August. We are adhering to our timeline, and any changes will be communicated to the public,” the senior official stated.
“When introducing a new technology, there are numerous tasks to be completed. This involves configuring the card, activating the outlet, and ensuring the functionality of the wallet. Additionally, testing is an integral part of the process,” the official elaborated.
“The deployment is currently in progress, the necessary portal for accessing the services must be established, and scalability is crucial. All banks are required to carry out integrations to enable the card, and these intricate processes are ongoing. We are dedicated to meeting our goal,” the official emphasized.
NIMC recently unveiled a new card embedded with payment features and social service functionalities in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System.
Furthermore, NIMC clarified that the new ID card has payment capabilities tailored for a wide array of social and financial services.
In a released statement, the initiative signifies a joint endeavor to offer enhanced options for local consumers while promoting service delivery in a more innovative, cost-efficient, and competitive manner.
