President Bola Tinubu and Prime Minister Philip Pierre have agreed to establish formal Nigeria Saint Lucia relations this week.
The two leaders met during President Tinubu’s state visit to Saint Lucia and discussed cooperation on various development areas.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the meeting, highlighting both nations’ commitment to strengthening Nigeria Saint Lucia relations further.
Tinubu described Saint Lucians as brothers, adding that both nations are united by history, culture, and shared aspirations.
He stressed that the partnership would foster mutual prosperity, deepen trade cooperation, and build lasting relations globally.
President Tinubu promised that Nigeria would collaborate with Saint Lucia on climate change, disaster response, and development financing efforts.
Prime Minister Pierre welcomed Tinubu warmly and praised the new era of friendship between Saint Lucia and Nigeria.
Pierre cited their shared cultural bonds, calling them embedded in history and impossible for time or geography to erase.
He referenced Sir Darnley Alexander, a Saint Lucian who served as Nigeria’s Chief Justice between 1975 and 1979.
Pierre said such historical ties laid the groundwork for deeper relations in trade, tourism, and education.
He identified agriculture, health, infrastructure, and entertainment as priority sectors where both countries could easily begin bilateral projects.
Pierre highlighted Saint Lucia’s Jazz and Arts Festival and proposed a cultural exchange with Nigeria’s booming entertainment industry.
He added that Saint Lucia is positioning itself as a global culture hub with mutual learning opportunities for Nigeria.
On education, Pierre emphasized producing one university graduate per household to accelerate national development and build regional knowledge economies.
President Tinubu expressed optimism that the relations of both countries would model successful Africa-Caribbean diplomacy for other developing nations worldwide.
