President Bola Tinubu supports INEC autonomy by inaugurating the construction of a new annex building for the commission.
The new structure, initiated by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, will complement INEC’s overcrowded headquarters in Abuja’s city centre.
Speaking at the site on Tuesday, Tinubu emphasized that the project symbolises commitment to Nigeria’s democratic and electoral integrity.
Tinubu supports INEC autonomy because he believes the commission deserves a facility that reflects its national importance and responsibilities.
He noted that the project represents more than concrete; it reflects respect for democracy and the independence of key institutions.
According to Tinubu, equipping INEC strengthens its ability to manage elections transparently and guarantees citizens’ voices are properly counted.
The president applauded Minister Wike’s initiative, describing the project as critical to resolving long-standing accommodation challenges facing INEC operations.
Wike explained that the project is part of broader efforts to renovate and expand federal infrastructure approved by the cabinet.
He promised the president that the project would be completed before the end of his ministerial tenure in office.
INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu acknowledged the need for expansion, saying the headquarters has remained overcrowded since it was built.
The original structure was intended for only 500 staff, yet INEC now has over 1,000 employees and more departments.
Yakubu said INEC’s existing building remains its headquarters, while the new structure will function as a supporting administrative annex.
Tinubu supports INEC autonomy, and Yakubu welcomed that gesture, dismissing concerns about FCTA’s involvement in constructing an independent commission’s office.
He reminded attendees that this was the third time FCTA has supported INEC with buildings since its move to Abuja.
With work now underway, stakeholders expect the project to improve INEC’s performance and boost national confidence in Nigeria’s electoral processes.
