Security analyst Seyi Babaeko has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare emergency in Benue amid escalating violent attacks.
He made this known on Tuesday, warning that failure to act swiftly could deepen Nigeria’s worsening humanitarian and security crisis.
Mr Babaeko emphasized that Tinubu declare emergency in Benue if attacks continue without clear and immediate government intervention strategies.
Babaeko commended Tinubu’s directive deploying security chiefs and mandating Governor Hyacinth Alia to initiate reconciliation efforts in Benue.
He described the ongoing violence as a humanitarian disaster, not mere sporadic attacks, citing over 100 deaths in Yelewata alone.
Amnesty International confirmed that many victims burned alive inside homes, while others lacked access to proper medical attention afterward.
He noted that Gwer West and Apa LGAs also experienced attacks in June, leaving at least 20 civilians dead.
Babaeko warned that unless Tinubu declare emergency in Benue, further bloodshed could destroy Nigeria’s agricultural and economic backbone completely.
He stressed Benue’s significance as Nigeria’s food basket, where farming now suffers due to insecurity and repeated armed invasions.
Amnesty documented 2,800 deaths across 235 incidents in 50 communities, displacing 12,369 individuals between 2023 and 2024 alone.
Between 2020 and 2024, Nextier recorded 2,347 casualties in 359 incidents between herders and farmers across Nigeria’s rural regions.
Babaeko said the North-Central region, where Benue lies, accounts for 89 percent of these violent deaths and massive displacement.
He called on federal forces to operate transparently and urged activation of early-warning systems across high-risk zones statewide.
According to Babaeko, Tinubu declare emergency in Benue to restore order, protect lives, and provide essential humanitarian relief immediately.
He concluded by demanding that Tinubu’s promises translate into real peace, rebuilt farms, and healed communities across Benue state.
