President Bola Tinubu has ordered a Federal Executive Council committee to urgently roll out measures to reduce food prices in Nigeria. The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, revealed this on Wednesday in Abuja.
He explained that the directive focuses on ensuring safe passage of farm produce across transport routes. This, he added, will lower logistics costs and make food more affordable.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is battling worsening food insecurity. Fuel subsidy removal, high transport costs, and insecurity on highways have disrupted food movement. As a result, prices keep rising.
Moreover, studies show that most Nigerians now spend a large share of their income on food. This situation, according to experts, threatens household survival and national stability.
The minister stressed that the plan aligns with Tinubu’s broader food security plan. This vision seeks not only food availability but also affordability, accessibility, and nutrition.
In addition, government will launch a Farmer Soil Health Scheme to improve productivity. A revamped cooperative reform initiative will also mobilise resources and empower rural farmers.
“Mr. President has shown strong interest in the cooperative sector as a tool for resource mobilisation and economic activity generation. It will, in turn, improve the livelihood of members,” Abdullahi said.
