ABUJA, Nigeria
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to democracy, national unity, and the rule of law, describing himself as a “die-hard democrat” dedicated to preserving Nigeria’s democratic system.
Tinubu made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing leaders of the All Progressives Congress and members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
Speaking during the meeting, the president noted that Nigeria’s democratic experience over the last 26 years has survived through the collective commitment and sacrifices of political actors across party lines.
Tinubu said Nigeria’s democracy continues to endure because political stakeholders willingly embrace democratic values and respect constitutional processes.
“I am glad we are all democrats and we all subscribe to this democracy voluntarily and willingly. We have been at it selflessly in the last 26 years,” the president stated.
‘I remain a die-hard democrat’ – Tinubu
Reaffirming his personal convictions, Tinubu stressed that his faith in democratic governance remains unwavering despite political challenges over the years.
The president explained that his dedication to democracy and national unity has remained constant throughout his political career.
“I am a die-hard democrat and I follow that belief wholeheartedly, committed to a united country, Nigeria. That principle and philosophy will live and die with me,” he said.
Tinubu also emphasized the need for political leaders to uphold the rule of law and resolve disagreements through dialogue, debate, and democratic procedures.
According to him, democracy allows both the majority and minority to express their views while respecting the outcome of lawful processes.
“The rule of law must prevail before any democrat. The majority will have their say and their way, and the minority will have their say and might not have their way. That is the sweetness and essence of democracy,” Tinubu said.
The president further noted that he remains loyal to the political platform on which he was elected while respecting the rights of others in Nigeria’s multi-party democratic structure.
Tinubu, who described himself as a registered voter committed to his party, also recalled remaining in opposition during earlier political periods without resorting to threats.
“When it was against me years past, I toed the line and stayed in opposition without threatening anyone but the military junta,” he added.
Tinubu concluded by urging political leaders across the country to prioritize peace, political stability, and democratic values in order to sustain Nigeria’s democratic progress.
He stressed that political actors must work together to protect democratic institutions and strengthen governance for national development.
