In a keynote address at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, President Bola Tinubu outlined Nigeria’s commitment to climate-smart agricultural practices as a cornerstone of its strategy to ensure food security and environmental sustainability. The President emphasized the need for innovation, global collaboration, and decisive action to address the dual challenges of climate change and economic development.

Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s leadership role as Africa’s largest economy, stressing the country’s responsibility to pioneer sustainable energy solutions. He revealed that the administration’s efforts are anchored on three pillars: energy transition, climate resilience, and sustainable development. This integrated approach, he explained, seeks to reduce carbon emissions while fostering economic growth and social equity.

Addressing Nigeria’s energy transition plan, Tinubu detailed the government’s focus on modernizing agriculture with eco-friendly practices to minimize environmental impact. Policies like the National Clean Cooking Gas Policy aim to promote clean energy while driving socioeconomic development. The President also shared Nigeria’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, supported by infrastructure for compressed natural gas and electric vehicles.

Tinubu also drew attention to Nigeria’s environmental challenges, including desertification, deforestation, and the shrinking of Lake Chad, which has disrupted millions of livelihoods. He emphasized the importance of partnerships with local communities to implement solutions and build resilience against these issues. “We are committed to ensuring no one is left behind in this journey towards sustainability,” he said.

The President emphasized the critical role of technology in advancing sustainable development, citing Nigeria’s adoption of clean energy innovations and artificial intelligence for agriculture. He invited international investors to join Nigeria’s green projects, highlighting the country’s leadership as the first in Africa to issue Sovereign Green Bonds to fund such initiatives.

Concluding his address, Tinubu called for global cooperation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing that environmental challenges are a shared responsibility. He expressed gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for hosting the event, urging participants to work collectively for a sustainable future for generations to come.
