The wife of Nigeria’s President, Oluremi Tinubu, has extended financial support to 250 elderly Nigerians in Oyo State through her Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS). The initiative, which is an annual program, aims to improve the well-being of elderly citizens across the country.
During the event in Ibadan, Mrs. Tinubu, represented by Oyo State Governor’s wife, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, explained that the scheme targets elderly individuals aged 65 and above across Nigeria, including veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA). She also shared that this year’s program saw an increase in the annual grant, with beneficiaries receiving N200,000 each, up from N100,000 in previous years. The initiative will disburse a total of N1.9 billion nationwide.
The funds, provided through RHIESS coordinators across the country, aim to support elderly citizens, especially during the festive season. In addition to the cash grants, beneficiaries will also receive free medical check-ups and other essential items. Mrs. Tinubu took the opportunity to advise seniors on prioritizing their health, maintaining proper nutrition, staying hydrated, and enjoying quality time with their loved ones.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs. Toyin Balogun, also commended the initiative, urging beneficiaries to use the funds wisely. Several of the elderly recipients expressed their gratitude, acknowledging the timely help as a significant boost, especially during the holiday period.
