Renowned figures in the Nollywood industry, in addition to acquaintances of the late thespians John Okafor, famously known as Mr Ibu, Amaechi Muonagor, and Zulu Adigwe, congregated at the Unity Fountain in Abuja for a candlelight procession. Reports have it that the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) orchestrated a candlelight procession on Monday evening to pay tribute to the veteran Nollywood actors. The ceremony was overseen by the National President of the AGN, Emeka Rollas, in the company of esteemed actors such as Kenneth Okonkwo, Zack Orji, Sidney Idiala, and others.
The participants seized the occasion to offer heartfelt homage to the departed artists for their priceless contributions to the Nigerian film industry. Addressing the assembly, the FCT mayor of AGN, Mercy Salma, articulated that the event was intended to express gratitude and reverence for the legacies and memories of the late actors. She conveyed, “These are distinguished Nollywood icons who brought joy to the countenances of Nigerians throughout their lifetimes, hence, it is only appropriate that we commemorate their enduring influence and legacy. They amassed a following of both young and old Nigerians, as well as admirers across Africa and beyond.”
Additionally, Emeka Rollas, speaking to the gathering, underscored that the procession symbolized the camaraderie within the actors’ guild and presented an opportunity to reflect on the shared experiences with the deceased actors. According to Rollas, the candlelight service also allowed actors to ponder how they aspire to be remembered for their contributions. He expressed, “During this period of mourning within the AGN, our hearts are laden with sorrow over the departure of our three esteemed members. Nevertheless, in the words of a timeless adage, when someone you cherish becomes a memory, that memory transforms into a cherished treasure. The late John Okafor, Amaechi Muonagor, and Zulu Adigwe led lives that epitomized excellence and inspired others to emulate. They illuminated paths for others through their own brilliance, leaving an indelible impact on society through their artistry. Today, we convene to pay homage to them, not solely by acknowledging and grieving our loss, but also by commemorating their exceptional personas.”
“These individuals fulfilled distinct and momentous roles in our lives and the theatrical sphere, serving as steadfast colleagues and dear confidants to many of us. Today, we celebrate these individuals as we recollect special moments shared; they embodied the pinnacle of benevolence, extending compassion to friends and colleagues, and being devoted fathers to their offspring. They devoted themselves wholeheartedly to their acting careers, toiling with ardor, integrity, and zeal. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families during this trying period.”
