Six operatives of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards (CPG), popularly known as Askarawa, and four local vigilantes were reportedly killed in an ambush by bandits in Anka Local Government Area on Saturday, sources have confirmed.
The operators were returning from a combined operation that was successfully led by the Nigerian Army and that killed a number of bandits, according to sources.
However, ten lives were tragically lost when they were ambushed by some hard-hearted bandits on their way back.
Dauda Lawal, the governor of Zamfara State, attested to the security personnel’s deaths during the ambush.
The governor revealed that the victims were members of a squad that had carried out an operation in Anka with military forces prior to being assaulted in the Bagega axis in a statement posted in Hausa on his verified Facebook page.
He added that three persons are still missing, including two members of the community Protection Guards and one local vigilante.
He stated, “I got information that gunmen ambushed some Zamfara State Community Protection Guards (CPG) in Anka Local Government. The incident occurred yesterday when security forces and the State Community Protection Guards (CPG) led by the Nigerian Army attacked the hideouts of the bandits and successful neutralized several bandits and recovered their weapons.”

“There are three people that are missing among them, two of whom are CPG members, while one is a Yansakai. When I learnt of the incident, I gave a directive that immediate medical assistance should be offered to the injured persons while the families of those who lost their lives be provided immediate relief materials.
