The Kano State House of Assembly has decided to reconsider the State Emirate Council Law 2019 and the Kano State Emirate Amendment Law 2023 for potential amendments.
The decision to reevaluate the law was prompted by a motion of public interest introduced by the Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Gurasa, during yesterday’s session.
During the session, the majority leader requested the lawmakers’ approval to recall the previous law for revisions.
In addition, a member of the House representing the Dawakin Kudu constituency, Shu’aibu Rabi’u, supported the motion.

The modification resulted in the division of the Kano Emirate Council into five separate emirates, namely Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi, along with the appointment of first-class emirs for the newly established councils.
Furthermore, it subtly paved the way for the removal of Sanusi as the emir of Kano.
Daily Sun recollects that following Abba Yusuf’s victory as the governor of Kano State, there have been vigorous attempts by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and certain factions to reinstate the previous Emirate Council Law.
A former governor of the state and leader of NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso, recently suggested that the matter of Kano emirates would be revisited.
