President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order instructing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to

dismantle the US Department of Education. The move is part of Trump’s campaign promise to decentralize education

and devolve powers to state governments.

According to a draft of the executive order, McMahon is directed to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure

of the Education Department”. The order cites the need to reduce the federal government’s role in education and

promote state-level control.

The US Department of Education was established in 1979 under President Jimmy Carter. However, Donald Trump

has argued that the department has become too centralized and bureaucratic, stifling innovation and progress in education.

The planned dismantling of the education department has sparked outrage among Democrats, teachers’ unions, and

parents. Critics argue that the move would undermine the public education system and exacerbate existing

inequalities.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon has expressed support for Trump’s plan, arguing that the excessive

consolidation of power in Washington is damaging education. However, her proposal to move some of the agency’s

functions to other parts of the government may face legal challenges.

The Washington Post reports that McMahon and other officials have suggested transferring some of the

department’s responsibilities to other federal agencies. However, this could prompt legal challenges and opposition from lawmakers.

The planned dismantling of the education department is part of Trump’s broader effort to reduce the federal

government’s role in education. The move is likely to face significant opposition from lawmakers, educators, and advocacy groups.

The US Department of Education plays a critical role in promoting education equity, supporting disadvantaged

students, and enforcing federal education laws. Dismantling the department could have far-reaching consequences

for the nation’s education system.

The fate of the US Department of Education remains uncertain, with lawmakers and educators bracing for a

potentially contentious battle over the department’s future.
