Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney shared that US President Donald Trump “respected Canada’s sovereignty” during their first official phone call.
The call, made amidst an ongoing trade war and rising tensions over tariffs, was described by both leaders as “constructive” and “extremely productive.”
Carney, currently campaigning in Canada’s upcoming election, praised the tone of the conversation, which marked a shift from Trump’s previous controversial comments regarding Canada.
The US President had often suggested that Canada could become the 51st state, a remark that has sparked widespread backlash among Canadians. However, Trump’s demeanor during the call was reportedly more diplomatic.
The leaders discussed the pressing issue of tariffs, with Trump planning to impose a 25% tariff on vehicle imports starting April 2. This tariff could severely impact Canada’s automotive industry, threatening up to 500,000 jobs.
In response, Carney reiterated that the US no longer acts as a “reliable trading partner” and vowed to impose retaliatory tariffs if the US moves forward with these new trade measures.

Despite the challenging circumstances, both leaders seemed committed to open communication. Carney noted that the call was “very constructive,” while Trump expressed optimism, stating, “I think things will work out very well between Canada and the United States.”
Trump’s stance on Canadian tariffs has had significant repercussions, including the imposition of a 25% duty on aluminum and steel imports, which has prompted Canada to retaliate with tariffs of its own on US goods, valued at approximately C$60 billion.
As Carney leads his party into the April 28 election, the relationship between Canada and the US remains a key issue, with some opposition leaders accusing the Liberal Party of being too accommodating to Trump’s demands. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the Prime Minister’s approach, suggesting that Carney’s policies have benefited Trump’s economic agenda at Canada’s expense.
While the trade war continues to escalate, Carney’s office has pledged to defend Canada’s interests, emphasizing that the election will play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s future relations with its southern neighbor.
