Tyson Picks Fury Over Joshua in Dream Heavyweight Showdown

In a nod to the changing dynamics of heavyweight boxing, legendary former world champion Mike Tyson has tipped Tyson Fury to emerge victorious in a long-speculated showdown against fellow British boxer Anthony Joshua.
During an interview with BBC Sport, Tyson shared his thoughts on what could be one of the biggest bouts in modern boxing history. Analyzing Joshua’s fighting style, Tyson was critical of British-Nigerian’s tendency to telegraph his punches, a flaw he believes Fury could easily exploit. “Joshua is a powerful puncher, no doubt about that,” Tyson acknowledged. “But his punches are often telegraphed. When you’re up against someone as skilled and unpredictable as Fury, that’s a big risk. Fury’s agility and height advantage make him a formidable opponent, especially for someone like Joshua who struggles with fluidity in the ring.”

Tyson’s remarks come as both fighters find themselves at crossroads in their careers. For Joshua, who suffered a shocking knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in September at Wembley, the challenge of regaining his top spot in the heavyweight ranks has never been steeper. At 35, Joshua’s recent form has raised questions about his ability to compete against the best in the division. His defeat to Dubois marked his third loss in four years, following back-to-back defeats against Oleksandr Usyk in 2021 and 2022. These setbacks have led to widespread criticism and speculation about his future, despite his impressive record and two-time world champion status.

Meanwhile, Fury, who is coming off a split-decision loss to Usyk in May, remains one of the most enigmatic figures in boxing. The 36-year-old lost his WBC heavyweight title in a close contest that many believed could have gone either way. Despite the setback, Fury’s resilience and unorthodox style have kept him at the forefront of the division. As he gears up for a highly anticipated rematch with Usyk next month, the boxing world is abuzz with speculation that a victory could set the stage for an all-British blockbuster clash with Joshua.

The potential fight between Fury and Joshua has been a topic of intense discussion among promoters, fans, and the fighters themselves for several years. Promoter Eddie Hearn, who manages Joshua, hinted that talks are underway to make the fight a reality, pending the outcome of Fury’s rematch with Usyk. Hearn stated, “This is a fight the world wants to see. We’ve been working on getting the right conditions and timing for it. Both fighters have had setbacks recently, but that only adds to the drama and anticipation.”

If Fury prevails against Usyk in the December rematch, the prospect of a fight with Joshua could bring one of the biggest paydays in boxing history. Industry insiders suggest that the bout could be part of the Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia, a high-profile event series known for attracting marquee sporting contests. Reports indicate that His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, is considering a lucrative offer to bring the fight to the Kingdom, providing a grand stage for what could be the defining match of both fighters’ careers.

In the meantime, Tyson’s comments have sparked further debate about the current landscape of the heavyweight division. Despite being a two-time world champion with a formidable knockout ratio, Joshua was notably absent from Tyson’s list of top five active fighters. Instead, Tyson praised the likes of Deontay Wilder, Andy Ruiz Jr., Vasyl Lomachenko, and Gervonta Davis. Even the current undisputed champion, Oleksandr Usyk, was left off his list, underscoring Tyson’s preference for aggressive, show-stopping fighters who bring excitement to the sport.

Tyson’s endorsement of Fury over Joshua reflects the shift in perception regarding the future of heavyweight boxing. While Joshua was once hailed as the saviour of the heavyweight division, his recent losses and stylistic flaws have dimmed his aura. Fury, with his unbeaten record until the Usyk fight and his charismatic presence, has become the face of the division, embodying the blend of skill, size, and personality that defines modern heavyweight boxing.

As the boxing world eagerly awaits Fury’s rematch with Usyk, the possibility of a showdown with Joshua looms large. Such a bout would not only be a clash of styles—Joshua’s power versus Fury’s agility but also a battle for legacy. For Joshua, it represents a chance to silence his critics and cement his status as one of the greats of his era. For Fury, it would be an opportunity to prove, once and for all, that he is the best heavyweight of his generation.

Adding another twist to the narrative, Mike Tyson himself is set to make a surprising return to the ring, taking on YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in an exhibition match at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on November 15. The 57-year-old former champion, who has not fought professionally in 18 years, expressed his excitement at the opportunity to return to the sport he once dominated. While the match is not expected to have significant implications for the professional rankings, it is sure to draw attention and add to the growing excitement surrounding the heavyweight division.

As the year draws to a close, fans are left with tantalizing possibilities. The outcome of Fury’s rematch with Usyk could set the stage for the long-anticipated mega-fight with Joshua, promising a spectacle that could redefine the landscape of heavyweight boxing and captivate the world.
