UK Afenifere Urge Nigerians to Seek Peace for National Progress

During ongoing nationwide protests in Nigeria over poor governance and economic difficulties, the Afenifere group based in the UK/Europe has urged Nigerians both at home and abroad to seek peaceful methods for achieving effective solutions in the country.

The group emphasized that growth and development are not possible without peace. They have called on state governors to ensure the safety of lives and property within their states and to take responsibility for maintaining security. They also urged Nigerians to avoid violent protests, suggesting that real improvements in governance can only be made if the people work together peacefully and unitedly.

In a statement released on Friday, August 9, 2024, in London, Engr. Anthony Ajayi, the group’s Secretary, appealed to President Bola Tinubu and his economic team to focus on the well-being of the citizens. He asked them to create policies that would alleviate the current hardships. The group noted that while Nigerians are facing severe hunger and frustration, they are only asking for basic necessities and support to help them become more productive.

Ajayi acknowledged recent government initiatives such as the N50 billion allocated for student loans and the establishment of the Consumer Credit Corporation, which has over N200 billion to help Nigerians buy essential products without immediate payment. These efforts are expected to provide significant benefits, including opportunities for higher education and improved access to essential goods.

Furthermore, the group praised President Tinubu for the Local Government Autonomy Law, which allows for greater accountability of local government officials. They encouraged the federal government to extend support programs to other sectors of the economy, such as agriculture. They suggested that farmers should receive grants rather than loans to encourage more people to engage in farming, which would contribute to food security.

The group also called for financial support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and the informal sector, where many young people with skills are employed, including mechanics, hairdressers, and electricians. They recommended the introduction of apprenticeship programs to help more youth become self-reliant and reduce unemployment.

Additionally, the group encouraged the government to leverage the sports and entertainment industries to engage the youth. They believe that engaging young people in these sectors will help reduce insecurity and foster peace.
The Afenifere group concluded by urging the government to be proactive in addressing the needs of its citizens and to seize the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
