UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the Benue massacre in Nigeria, which claimed 200 civilian lives.
The attack occurred in Yelewata village, North Central Nigeria, where gunmen killed sleeping residents and displaced numerous families overnight.

Speaking through his deputy spokesperson, Guterres urged Nigerian authorities to arrest and prosecute those responsible for the horrifying violence.
He noted that the United Nations is closely monitoring the situation and stands in solidarity with affected communities in Benue.
The Benue massacre in Nigeria has drawn widespread outrage, prompting renewed calls for justice and meaningful action against unrelenting violence.
President Bola Tinubu has also condemned the killings, urging peace, reconciliation, and justice for the lives lost in Benue.

Tinubu specifically called on Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia to reconcile with groups involved in the violent hostilities plaguing the region.
As part of his response, the President will visit the state on Wednesday to engage stakeholders and encourage peaceful coexistence.
During the visit, Tinubu is expected to meet with traditional rulers, political leaders, youth groups, and local community heads.
The goal is to identify practical, long-term solutions to the ongoing crisis and prevent another Benue massacre in Nigeria.

President Tinubu also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and all citizens impacted by the senseless loss of lives.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ending insecurity and supporting all efforts aimed at restoring peace to troubled areas.
Global observers believe the Benue massacre in Nigeria represents a critical moment for government accountability and stronger conflict resolution policies.
The UN maintains that the protection of civilians must remain a top priority and that impunity for such crimes must end.
Nigerians continue to demand swift justice, real peacebuilding initiatives, and visible government presence in regions ravaged by violence and displacement.
