Unifying Voices: Igbo Women Calls for Peace, and Release of Nnamdi Kanu

Women associations in Igbo-speaking regions, represented by Umuada Igbo Nigeria and its international counterparts, have implored President Bola Tinubu to secure the freedom of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
This renewed plea comes in response to growing calls from various sources, including the South East Governors’ Forum (SEGF), the National Assembly Caucus from the region, the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF), as well as other organizations and distinguished Nigerians.

The women emphasized that Kanu’s unconditional release would not only reinstate peace and security but also revitalize social and economic activities across the five southeastern states.
In a statement released in Enugu on Friday by their President General/Founder, Lolo Kate Ezeofor, the women expressed their regret regarding the prolonged detention of the self-determination advocate, noting that it had not yielded favorable outcomes for the federal government or the state governments and residents of the area.

The statement conveyed; “Umuada Igbo Nigeria and its counterparts in seven Igbo-speaking States: Abia, Anambra, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers, as well as Umuada Igbo in other States of Nigeria and abroad, who hold a special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council at the United Nations in New York, USA, and Geneva, Switzerland, on behalf of all Igbo women, mothers, sisters, and wives, respectfully beseech Your Excellency, Bola Tinubu, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to utilize your esteemed position to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from DSS custody.
“We firmly believe that his liberation will usher in enduring peace in the southeast and beyond in Nigeria.”
The women’s associations stress that Nnamdi Kanu’s release is crucial for peace and prosperity in the region. They call upon President Bola Tinubu to intervene and ensure Kanu’s freedom. The statement highlights the negative impact of Kanu’s prolonged detention on the area’s social and economic well-being. Umuada Igbo Nigeria and its international counterparts urge urgent action to bring about peace and security in the southeast. They believe that Kanu’s release will lead to lasting peace not only in the southeast but also in Nigeria as a whole.
