After refusal to yield to his earlier removal by his colleagues, lawmaker, who represents Agege Constituency I, Mudashiru Obasa, has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.Obasa was re-elected on Monday after the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down as the Speaker of the House.
Obasa’s re-election followed the nomination of a former Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams, representing Eti-Osa Constituency 1.Previously, Mojisola Meranda, the state’s first female speaker, resigned Monday, sparking a wave of resignations and reorganisations in the crisis-plagued Lagos State House of Assembly.
She announced her resignation on Monday as lawmakers re-elected her as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, announced her resignation at the plenary, after which lawmakers immediately re-elected her as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.
Her leadership style and efforts to bring harmony to the Lagos State House of Assembly were praised by the lawmakers. They also praised her modesty and strength for adhering to the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) laws and regulations.
Following a rumoured meeting with some senior APC members in the state to discuss the leadership issue that has rocked the sacred chambers for the past seven weeks, Meranda resigned.Similarly, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Mojeed Fatai, who represents Ibeju-Lekki Constituency I, announced his resignation as the deputy speaker of the House.Fatai said his resignation was in the interest of the House. He was immediately re-elected as the Chief Whip of the Assembly.
The Chief Whip of the Assembly, Setonji David, who represents Badagry constituency II also resigned his position and was re-elected as the Deputy Chief Whip of the house.A member of the House from Kosofe Constituency I, Okanlawon Sanni, also tendered his resignation as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House.More details to unfold…
