Bayern Munich appointed Vincent Kompany as the new head coach of the esteemed German club on a three-year contract, marking a surprising development.
Despite his Burnley team being relegated from the Premier League this season, the 38-year-old Kompany has decided to join Bayern.
Expressing his excitement for the challenge ahead at FC Bayern, Kompany emphasized the honor of working for such a renowned institution in international football, as stated in a club release.
Kompany’s recruitment concludes Bayern’s extensive quest for a replacement for Thomas Tuchel following the club’s first season without a trophy in 12 years.
Tuchel was announced to depart at the end of the season in February after falling behind eventual champions Bayer Leverkusen in the title race.
Notably, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann, and Austria’s manager Ralf Rangnick all reportedly declined Bayern’s interest.
After taking the helm at Burnley in July 2022, Kompany guided the Clarets to promotion from the second-tier Championship in his inaugural season.
Struggling to adapt to the Premier League, Burnley only managed to win five games and accumulate 24 points, marking their lowest top-flight tally in history.
Despite the challenges faced, Kompany maintained the support of his former coach at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, who endorsed the Belgian for the Bayern position.
Sporting director Christoph Freund praised Kompany for aligning with FC Bayern’s playing philosophy and identity, highlighting his youth, ambition, and extensive international experience.
Recognized for his ability to connect with players and understand the intricacies of the game, Kompany is expected to make a significant impact on the team.
Having previously played in the Bundesliga with Hamburg early in his career, Kompany’s proficiency in German was considered a valuable asset by the Bayern board.
Burnley is set to receive £10 million ($13 million) in compensation for releasing their manager, acknowledging the allure and prestige of a club like Bayern Munich and respecting Kompany’s pursuit of new opportunities.
