The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called out former Rivers State Governor, Peter Odili, accusing him of hypocrisy and self-interest. Speaking at a thanksgiving service in Port Harcourt, Wike alleged that Odili had reduced himself to a political opportunist by siding with incumbent Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Wike dismissed Odili’s claims that Fubara had prevented him from turning Rivers State into his personal estate. He argued that Odili himself had monopolized influence in the state, pointing out that several of Odili’s family members occupy strategic positions in the Rivers State government. Wike added, “Between him and me, who has turned Rivers into a private estate? His wife is a council chair, his daughter a commissioner, another daughter a judge, and he acts as the overseer.”
Recalling his tenure as governor, Wike claimed that he revived Odili’s political relevance after years of being sidelined. He reminded the audience of Odili’s glowing praises during his governorship, contrasting it with the former governor’s current criticism. “Odili once said I surpassed all past governors, including himself. Now he praises a governor who hasn’t spent a year in office as being better than all his predecessors. What kind of elder statesman talks like this?” Wike queried.
The FCT Minister accused Odili of inconsistency, stating that the former governor initially opposed Fubara’s candidacy but has now organised public events in his honour. Wike also criticised Odili’s record during his eight years in office, alleging that he failed to achieve any significant development or political legacy.
Wike further recalled Odili’s failed presidential ambition, blaming it on his lack of courage. He recounted how he avoided inviting former President Olusegun Obasanjo to Rivers State during his tenure to spare Odili any embarrassment over the failed bid. “This is a man who abandoned his presidential aspiration because Obasanjo said no. What achievements can he boast of in his eight years as governor?” Wike remarked.
