Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has promised to allocate land in the FCT to the University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) for the establishment of its Centre for Leadership and Political Studies.
This promise was made when the university’s Governing Council, led by Pro-Chancellor Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa, visited Wike in Abuja on Monday. The proposed centre is envisioned as a Nigerian counterpart to the John F. Kennedy Leadership Centre in the United States.
Ohuabunwa requested Wike’s support to enable the university to build the centre, which would include studies on “Wikematics Political Ideology”.Wike agreed to support the allocation of land but clarified that he would not use FCT funds to build the centre.
Instead, he pledged to personally contribute towards the establishment of a well-equipped multimedia centre at the university’s Convocation Arena.The multimedia centre is part of the university’s preparations for its 50th anniversary celebration, which includes a N10 billion endowment fund.
Wike also promised to provide N350 million for the multimedia centre from his personal funds, as well as contributions from his wife and friends.

The University of Port Harcourt’s Convocation Arena was built by Wike during his tenure as governor of Rivers State, along with the establishment of the Faculty of Law when he served as Minister of Education. Wike’s contributions to the university’s development will be recognised during the anniversary celebration.
Ohuabunwa congratulated Wike on his appointment as FCT Minister and commended his outstanding performance. The Pro-Chancellor also announced that the university would celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025 with a series of events.Wike urged the university management to reach out to other alumni, particularly Gov. Charles Soludo of Anambra, who also graduated from the university.
